How hospital appointments work
Most hospital appointments are arranged by a family member or professional. Send the facility name, timing, and document category, and I’ll help you understand what to have ready for the notarial appointment — without providing legal advice.
Signer participation matters. California law requires the signer to personally appear, communicate their willingness to sign, and meet identification requirements. A notary cannot make medical or legal determinations about capacity — if the legal requirements can’t be met at the appointment, the notarization cannot be completed that day, and only the trip fee applies.

Can you notarize if the signer can’t sign their name?
California law includes specific procedures for certain situations (such as signature by mark). What’s possible depends on the circumstances at the appointment and current law — call to talk through the situation before booking.
Does the notary decide if my family member is competent?
No. A notary is not a medical or legal professional and does not certify competence. The notary must be able to communicate with the signer and confirm willingness at the appointment; if legal requirements can’t be met, the notarization can’t be completed.
Which power of attorney form should we use?
That’s a legal question a notary cannot answer. An attorney or the receiving institution can tell you which form fits your situation. Once you have the completed document, I can perform the authorized notarial act.
